The History of Maz Trucks

70 years ago, on February 10, 1951, the Minsk Automobile Plant began to produce a flatbed 7-ton MAZ truck, which became the most massive heavy truck of the post-war years in the USSR.

For the first time in the USSR, MAZ used synchronizers in all forward gears, the highest accelerating gear, pump injectors, and a tachometer. In order to simplify and reduce the cost of construction, as well as due to the shortage of thin rolled steel sheets in the country, the cab of the car was made on a wooden frame with wooden plank sheathing, and on top of it - sheets of black tin painted in a protective color (cars supplied for export were painted in blue).

Initially, the YaAZ-204 engine was installed on MAZ, an analogue of the engine from an American tractor, with a capacity of 110 hp. With. Later, after modernization, its power increased to 120 hp. With.

In the very first year of production, MAZ developed an army modification of a 4 × 2 truck, which had a high-sided body, extensions to the sides, folding benches for transporting people and removable arches for installing an awning. The car had a rear axle with an increased gear ratio, and its maximum speed was 52 km / h. The following year, the MAZ-200V truck tractor, designed for towing semi-trailers (also manufactured by MAZ) on improved roads, went into production. It was equipped with a YaAZ-204V high-power engine with a capacity of 135 hp. with., which differs from the base one, mainly in pump-injectors with increased cyclic flow.

The chassis under the designation MAZ-200D was widely used to install a variety of bodies and mechanisms: tank trucks for various purposes (ATs-8-200), tankers (TZ-200), milk carriers (ATs-525), watering and washing machines (PM-9) , cranes (K-51, K-52, K-53), self-loading vehicles with an inclined platform for transporting containers (APK-6).

In 1962, the car received a new 4-stroke 6-cylinder diesel engine YaMZ-236 with a capacity of 165 hp. With. with increased efficiency, later installed on the MAZ-500 family and produced in the form of various modifications and used to this day. Accordingly, the designations of the models also changed: for example, the flatbed truck became known as the MAZ-200P (“transitional”), and the truck tractor became the MAZ-200M. Another truck tractor of that period, the MAZ-200R, had hydraulic equipment to control the tipping of the body of the MAZ-5232V tipper semi-trailer.

In total, 230,000 vehicles were produced at MAZ until December 31, 1965, when the plant completely switched to the production of the MAZ-500 model and its modifications.

These cars were "hard workers" and only a few survived to our times. Finding a MAZ in good condition now is a rare success.
