History of Kia Bongo

In addition to the familiar passenger cars, the Korean company Kia Motors also produces commercial vehicles. The most widely used light-duty trucks with a carrying capacity of up to 1 ton Kia Bongo (Kia Bongo), export modifications of which are designated as Kia K-series (Kia K-Series): K2400, K2500, K2700, K3000, K3600 (the numbers indicate the rounded engine capacity in cubic centimeters ). In addition, Kia Bongo trucks were delivered to some countries under the name Kia Frontier.

The Kia Bongo family of commercial vehicles first appeared in 1980 and was a Korean variant of the second generation Mazda Bongo. The fourth generation of the model was developed by the Korean company independently and is known as the Kia Bongo III - it has been produced since 2004. A variety of modifications of a light truck are provided: flatbed, flatbed with an awning, a manufactured goods or isothermal van, a refrigerator, a dump truck, and so on. All-wheel drive vehicles are also available, and the range of engines and truck cab, wheelbase and payload options are designed to meet the needs of a wide range of customers. Kia Bongo officially came to Russia in 2009 and was offered as an alternative to the Hyundai Porter and TagAZ "Master", similar light trucks with a cabover cab layout. Engines for Kia Bongo 2009-2012 were offered only diesel: 2.5 BH (94 hp), 2.7 J2 (80 hp) and 2.9 J3 (123 hp) in combination with 5-speed mechanics, and for version 2.9 - also with a 4-band automatic.

The standard package of Kia Bongo already includes power steering, adjustable steering column, audio preparation with antenna and radio, electronic clock, tachometer, fuel filter heating. Separate configurations were offered with standard air conditioning and power accessories, heated mirrors, seats and other options. There are different cab options: standard, King with an enlarged cab (in this case, behind the front seats there is room for toolboxes and miscellaneous things), and a double six-seat cab has two rows of seats and an additional pair of doors. The driver's seat is quite comfortable and has standard adjustments. There are stands, shelves, niches for placing various items. It is also convenient in the truck that when transporting long lengths, its side walls are equipped with locking posts that do not allow them to hang out when the tailgate is folded down. To protect against damage during loading, the upper part of the side has a rubber bumper.

Diesel working volume of 2497 cubic meters. cm, combined with a five-speed manual transmission, develops a maximum power of 94 hp. and a torque of 253 Nm. Thanks to the rather impressive traction, the truck easily starts off both in first and second gear. This engine complies with the ecological type Euro-4 and consumes an average of 12 liters of fuel per 100 km. The more powerful J3 2.9 CRDi unit has a working volume of 2902 cu. see Its characteristics: maximum power - 123 hp, torque - 260 Nm. Modifications with this engine and rear-wheel drive on the “mechanics”, in addition to the standard options for a load capacity of 1 ton, include versions designed for 1.4 tons. In addition, with this engine, the car can be equipped with an all-wheel drive system - with a front axle connected if necessary and a reduction gear. Ecological type of engine - Euro-5. Fuel consumption in the combined cycle is about 10.5 l / 100 km. Bongo III can also be found in versions with a simple 2.7-liter J2 engine (80-83 hp) with a mechanical high-pressure fuel pump that perfectly “digests” domestic diesel fuel.

The Kia Bongo is based on a chassis with a reliable spar frame. An independent suspension is installed at the front, and a dependent spring at the rear. This design provides optimal machine maneuverability and driving comfort, as well as the ability to carry loads up to 1-1.4 tons. The front brakes of the truck are ventilated disc, rear - drum. The steering is equipped with a hydraulic booster, but, unlike passenger cars, the steering wheel makes about 4.5 turns from lock to lock. But the minimum turning radius is only 4.8 meters with a wheelbase of 2415-2810 mm. The length of the machine is from 4820 to 5120 mm. Width - 1740 mm, height - from 1975 to 2105 mm. The internal size of the onboard platform in length varies from 1700 to 3110 mm, width is 1630 mm, height is 355 mm.

To ensure the minimum required level of protection for the driver and passengers, Kia Bongo 2009-2012 is equipped with a safety steering column, three-point seat belts (lap for the middle passenger), reflectors in the corners of the doors that reflect light at night. It is necessary to take into account the main disadvantage of the Kia Bongo cabover cabin layout - relatively low passive safety. At the same time, in the KNCAP crash test in 2007, the KIA Bongo III showed quite a decent result - three stars for driver safety and five stars for passenger safety.
