International History

The International brand is the largest manufacturer of agricultural and commercial vehicles. He has come a long way from a monopolist in the market to a victim of bankruptcy and reorganization. The history of the International brand has been going on for more than a century. Brand history The company has revolutionized the US agricultural industry. In just a few years, from a small local enterprise, it has turned into a corporation with a worldwide reputation.

Birth of a trademark The history of the brand begins in 1834, when the American Cyrus McCormick patented his invention - a horse-drawn threshing machine. The main task of the inventor was the automation of agricultural implements. Thus, the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company, an agricultural machinery manufacturing and sales enterprise, was born, which expanded rapidly.

In the 1880s, a fierce struggle broke out between the McCormick company and other enterprises for leadership in the American market. To end the economic wars, in 1902 McCormick merged with its longtime rival, Deering. The result was a corporation called International Harvester (abbreviated as IH or International). International during the First World War In 1914, the International brand launched its own tractor production.

Already by 1915, the first tractors with gasoline engines were produced under the brands Mogul and Titan. Their technical characteristics differed significantly from previous models of the brand, so International machines quickly reached a new level of quality and became popular with small farmers. Unlike their massive ancestors, they were reliable, compact and more manoeuvrable.

Since the 1920s, mass production of tractors, combines, bulldozers began, but International trucks remained the key product. In the 1960s, despite increased sales, profit growth stalled. The conservative policy of the company prevented the implementation of new development strategies. Economic problems could not be solved even by the change of the general director in 1979. A drop in employee morale led to widespread strikes. The once largest corporation was on the verge of bankruptcy.

In 1986, the International brand was forced to sell its agricultural division and part of Tenneco's assets. The rest of the production received a new name - Navistar International. The company exists to this day. Its main market products are medium and heavy duty trucks and school buses.

In 2002-2007, International trucks strengthened their position in the domestic market. In 2003, the Navistar defense division was created to sell military equipment. Since 2007, regular deliveries of International MaxxPro armored personnel carriers for the American army have begun. The contract accounted for 40% of the funds from the entire Pentagon program to create an armored vehicle that is resistant to mines and shelling. International MaxxPro For the last 15 years, the Navistar platform has been producing serial military equipment for tactical and commercial purposes. In March 2020, the company received a contract to build general purpose military trucks for the US Army in Iraq. The development of universal armored vehicles is planned to be completed by February 2021.
