History American LaFrance

American LaFrance is one of the oldest companies in North America and is a manufacturing division of Freightliner Corporation, part of Daimler Chrysler. Throughout its 168 year history, American LaFrance has produced America's most famous brand of fire engines.

The company has devoted itself entirely to the production of vehicles and the most efficient equipment capable of extinguishing fires of even the highest category of complexity. American LaFrance is the pride of American firefighters, symbolizing style, reliability and state-of-the-art equipment at the same time. Many worn-out cars become exhibits of private collections as symbols of American statehood.

It is no coincidence that in 1995, when evaluating the leaders of the American automotive industry with a view to purchasing, Freightliner Corporation chose American LaFrance. As you know, Freightliner has always been famous for its design office and production facilities, and LaFrance for original cars that Americans have become so accustomed to over the years. The alliance promised to be very mutually beneficial and the combination of two such respected companies had a positive impact on the development of a new production concept, the development of new technologies and the release of completely new models of Freightliner business class cars and American LaFrance specialized equipment.

American LaFrance has been manufacturing special purpose vehicles and fire fighting equipment since 1832. Whatever the company produces, from hand pumps to the most modern machines, throughout its history, American LaFrance has been a trendsetter in the automotive industry. With advances in firefighting technology, American LaFrance has been developing cars, engines and telescopic ladders over the years.

In late 1873, the LaFrance Manufacturing Company develops and introduces the first steam rotary engine for water supply. The invention is patented and the company changes its name to LaFrance Steam Engine Company and becomes the owner of exclusive rights to manufacture fire carts with a steam boiler.

The next novelty was not long in coming. In 1882, the company signs a manufacturing agreement with Daniel Hayes. The result is the first telescopic ladder capable of extending 85 feet in height. The ladder is assembled by hand and extremely slowly, but it allows you to put out fires in the attics of houses.

In 1984, LaFrance introduced its new development - a reciprocating steam engine. In 1988, the engine is improved and actively advertised under the slogan: “We guarantee that in less than five minutes, cold water will turn into 80 pounds of steam!”
