The History of  FAW Trucks

FAW (First Automobile Works) Group Corporation is China's state-owned automobile manufacturer headquartered in Changchun. It manufactures passenger cars, small cars, SUVs, light, medium and heavy trucks, buses, as well as spare parts and powertrains. FAW is the first Chinese car manufacturer. The company is one of the "big four" automakers in China, along with Chang'an Motors, Dongfeng Motor and SAIC Motor. In 2014, the automaker produced 2.7 million vehicles.

The year of foundation of the FAW Group Corporation is considered to be 1953, when the construction of the future plant started at the beginning of the five-year plan. In the early years, the Soviet Union provided significant assistance to the Chinese automaker. He provided technical support, production equipment and tools. Before the opening of the plant, 39 employees of the Chinese FAW were trained in the manufacture of trucks in the USSR.

The enterprise under construction was modeled after Soviet automobile factories. So, the FAW checkpoint exactly repeats the ZIL checkpoint. The USSR advised the company to choose the city of Changchun as the site for the construction of the plant, since it had a large production potential.

Initially, FAW produced only commercial trucks. The only model was the Jiefang, copied from the ZIS-150. On August 1, 1958, the first passenger car was launched. It was a luxury government limousine Hongqi CA72, designed to transport senior officials and high-ranking foreign guests. The design of the car repeated the developments of Chrysler. Under the hood was a 197-horsepower V8 engine.

In September of the same year, the company introduced an open-top version. In 1963, a modification of the CA770 appeared, which, although in limited quantities, was produced until 1980. In 1965, a version of this car was released with an extended wheelbase and three rows of seats, and in 1969, an armored modification.

After that, Audi cars, which have traditionally been popular among Chinese government officials, began to arrive on the FAW production line.

In 1984, a division of the company was created, which was engaged in sales and marketing in the international market. FAW was becoming a serious player on the world stage: production facilities are soon opening in Pakistan, South Africa, Tanzania, Thailand, Ukraine, Vietnam.

In 1986, the brand bought Dalian Diesel Engine Co, a company that manufactures engines for commercial trucks, construction equipment and agricultural machines.

In 1992, First Automobile Works was renamed China FAW Group Corporation.

Despite the fact that FAW has always been one of the largest Chinese automakers, the company sought to establish the strongest relationships with the leaders of the global automotive industry. In 1990, FAW enters into a joint venture with Volkswagen, becoming the second Chinese automaker to establish close business ties with foreign partners. The first such company was SAIC, which in 1984 also entered into an agreement with Volkswagen.

Soon, other foreign companies began to appear behind VW, wishing to cooperate with FAW. The automaker entered into partnership agreements with Toyota, General Motors, Ford, Mazda and others.

In 2005, the Sichuan FAW Toyota Motor Joint Venture began manufacturing the hybrid Toyota Prius, which cost twice as much as its US counterpart in China. FAW then bought a mild hybrid license from Toyota, which allowed it to develop the Hongqi sedan. In addition to the sedan, the automaker produces Jiefang hybrid buses.

Under the separate Besturn brand, FAW launches the B70 mid-size luxury sedan, which is based on the first generation Mazda6. It is equipped with a 2-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with 147 hp. The model appeared on the Chinese market in 2006. The B70 features a luxurious interior, reliability and excellent handling.

In 2009, the Besturn B50 compact model, also based on the first generation Mazda6 platform, entered the market. The car is equipped with a four-cylinder in-line 1.6-liter engine with 103 hp. from the second generation Volkswagen Jetta. The power unit is paired with a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.

Now FAW owns manufacturing plants located in 14 provinces throughout China, the brand's sales geography covers more than 80 countries. One of the main directions of FAW development is the improvement of existing and the development of new vehicles that will successfully compete in their segment with recognized European and American rivals.
